Crystal clear white rum with all the hallmarks of Cockspur.
Five times distilled rum with a penetrating and distinctive taste.
A clean, yet complex taste with the distinct sweetness of Caribbean sugar cane, an experience of beautifully mature and delicate flavor.
It goes great with cocktails, but is especially delicious served with lemon-lime soda, cola, or fruit juice.
History
Hanschell & Company was founded by the Dane Valdemar Hanschell in 1884.
He worked for Lamb's, a shipping company, in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. He then went to Barbados, where he set up his own business and opened a coaling station for ships passing through the Panama Canal, supplying incoming ships with ropes, sails, salt, fresh fruit, meat, vegetables, and water, including recruiting schooner crews.
A rum business was established, called Cockspur (after the company which was based in Cockspur Street, London). It was established as a brand of Hanschell. Later, GAL Larsen (also from Denmark), who was the company's lawyer and authorized representative, was invited to join the business.
The company changed its name to Hanschell and Larsen. The business continued for most of the first half of the century, focusing on selling ship's goods and rum.
According to Barbadian law, distilleries and bottlers had to source liquor from all over the island.
Since 1973, Cockspur rum has been produced exclusively at the West Indies Rum Distillery , where the first distillation column in the islands was installed.
An old John Gore two-column still is used here, providing some of the rum from the blend. The rest is a blend of high-strength light rum from a four-column still and medium and heavy pot-still rums from kettle stills.
